Dog Food and the use of human grade ingredients
Due
to the fact that North America has not set up standards for
the terminology “human grade”, and due to the
significant outbreak of BSE in Europe and also the European
consumers demand for their perception of safe food products,
the European Union has for the last several years been
moving to implement stringent controls on the use of animal
products. Petcurean Dog Food uses only EU standards
approved, fit for human consumption protein sources.
Consequently
the only approved animal protein ingredients allowed for use
in products in the EU have been inspected and deemed fit for
human consumption. The North American system by contrast has
very few rules and no categories of rendered product. The
only general rules are that pets cannot be included and that
bovine species cannot be fed rendered protein that contains
bovine. Specified risk materials, animals from TSE
incidents, drug residues, and anything else classified by
the EU as high to medium risk are rendered in North America
into meat meal and fed to poultry, swine and pets.
